It's the movement ASL uses when writing the word "scissors"; the symbol is 'hinge-in-between'. (The 'in-between' symbol with hinges inside instead of a contact symbol.) Val teaches it under Question #0069 on the e-Lessons, but it's not in the manual.KJTo: sw-l at majordomo.valenciacc.eduSubject: RE: [sw-l] FLASH-THE-LIGHTFrom: CWren at doe.k12.ga.usDate: Fri, 3 Aug 2007 14:50:05 -0400

I'd like to see that, but I like the idea!

That's an idea. Double scissors might work.

Instead of the "buttons" as you

show that the fingers open and spread?

What I'm trying to get is a way to reduce
the amount of writing. I understand full-well that it is a hinge
movement, but the question was asked whether three hand shapes are needed
to separate out from "puppet" hands to "full spread out"
hands. To me, the "buttons" indicate a full open from all
joints, therefore if coupled with a hinge would show a "spread"
hand, not a flat hand, without having to put all three handshapes -- which
might be mistaken for fingerspelling or an actual movement in space of
three hands.
Then the difference between "puppets" and "sunshine"
or "lights" would be a matter of movements, not having to write
multiple handshapes to any one of several "open" handshapes from
a single closed one.

How about this?

The open and closed buttons (in addition
to the hinge movement would indicate that the hands open to full extension
(spread out), not simply "puppet" hands.

The sign that is being written is a quick
on-off of the light(s). So it starts closed, then opens and quickly closes.
The most accurate spelling is with the three handshaps, but it just feels
like there are too many hands. (I didn't know humans had more than two
hands!) The other problem is that there is no general arm (or any other
movements for that matter) except for the open-close, else the inital writing
would have been very good. I tried to see if it would work with the finger
movement symbols we have (the hindge ^), but Stuart pointed out a good
one. When the hand opens, are the fingers together or spread? The way that
it is written, it could mean both. And ASL uses both at times, so we can't
just say that it means spread here because if we want to write a puppet
talking over our head, we would be stuck. :-) So even though I agree with
Kelly Jo that the three handshaps is too much, it seems like it is the
best way with the choices we have come up with.

I guess the movement goes twice, so the one with the down twice expresses
that most clearly for me. Perhaps ^^ would be better because the
movement feels downward to me, not across.
