Hi Bill,
I'd assume the Sidekick does not fully implement the PNG standard.
There are 3 layers of PNGs at work here. First are the original symbol
PNGs with transparency. Those symbols are resized and colored for the
sequence. Then those symbols are spatially combined for the sign
image. The sign image is the most complicated and is probably causing
the problem.
I'd be interested to know if the same problem exists for the SignWriting
Image Server.

It was an experience trying to get the signs to resize, color, and
retain transparency. In the SignWriting Image Server you can take a
look at the scripts "glyph.php" and "glyphogram.php" for the actual
implementation of individual symbols and completed signs respectively.
